Our Goals

Our Focus
Why we do what we do!
Some members of communities of color face several disadvantages that keep them from realizing the American dream and achieving success. Three of those issues help drive our passion and focus as a nonprofit.
First is the education gap. For example, teenagers in Clayton County, GA, located in the southern part of Atlanta, graduate from high school at a rate of 73%, compared to the US average of 88%. This example shows that many of our teenagers are struggling before their adult lives begin.
Second is the wealth gap. There is a significant amount of research highlighting the financial gap in communities of color. The education gap, income gap, housing gap, and retirement gap create a massive wealth gap that clearly shows that many people of color struggle every day to keep up.
Third is the health gap. Nearly 14% of people in Clayton County, GA, have diabetes compared to the US average of 7%. COVID-19 exposed the impact of underlying health conditions and how diseases like diabetes can kill. Diabetes disproportionately affects communities of color, even when income is not the issue. Vaping is also a significant issue in some communities, which puts some teenagers in the hospital for lung and respiratory problems.
The Sherrod Foundation Inc. is proud to take up the fight by providing the one thing that can never be taken away, knowledge. Give a person fish and they won't be hungry now. Teach a person how to fish and they will never be hungry.

Our Principles

Transparency
Officials, managers, board members, and other staff are not paid, so we can assure our donors that most funds support the community. Read more about our Donor Bill of Rights.

Integrity
We are transparent about our funding sources and all expenses. We use the #1 industry leader, QuickBooks, for our financial tracking system. We utilize an outside CPA firm for our tax and legal compliance needs.

Respect
Distressed families are a result of their environment and need support to help themselves improve their condition without judgment.
